| Sponsor | sagemark | May 6, 9:51am | I'm trying to understand the statistics. Why are more black people incarcerated for possession of marijuana than any other race? Is it strictly because they are black, or is it that they fail to hide their use?
My guess is the majority of those incarcerated for possession, white black or otherwise is due to being careless, flaunting their use and failing to maintain a level of responsibility.
Not to mention, the more intelligent defendant will have a better attorney and a better day in court. |

| Teiresias | May 6, 10:16am | From the story (sorry for not including it, but I figured interested peeps would click the link):
Some crime experts say that the disparities exist for sound reasons. Heather Mac Donald, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute in New York, said it made sense for police to focus more on fighting visible drug dealing in low-income urban areas, largely involving members of minorities, than on hidden use in suburban homes, more often by whites, because the urban street trade is more associated with violence and other crimes and impairs the quality of life.
Mind you, the Manhattan Institute is a free-market, right-leaning think tank that has been very influential in the areas of the justice system and the welfare-reform of the mid-1990s. |

| | | nosmokes | May 7, 11:55pm | | The fact more blacks are in serious poverty and live in cramped conditions that may be less conducive to them smoking some weed someplace safe, indoors away from the cops that are looking for any excuse to rout their ass probably doesn't help the matter. But, ya know, while they din't have a choice about being born white or black, rich or poor,Sagemark makes a choice to be an ignorant racist bigoted anus.Unfortunately he doesn't bring anything new to the role, instead relying on all the old stereotypes we tired of years ago. No new energy,no creativity, just another bad actor has been in a role that was old, worn out and distasteful when it made it's dbut in ancient Grece, and unlike fine wine, it definitely does not improve with age. |

| | | nosmokes | May 8, 12:22am | | The poor folks are still fucked. The 9th ward which is where the worst of the flooding was and where the most of poor lived still looks like Dresden or London during or after WWII. Less than 1/2 of the population has returned. There is a lot of talk about the accuracy of the official death toll.Other parts of the city are doing fairly well. The Garden district, the CBD and the Quarter hardly look like anything happened at all.If you were planning a trip please go. The city is open and waiting. It ain't the same but they're working on it. |
